The House that Wasn’t there and other Common Dream Symbols (Therapy Thursday)

I was in my childhood house, only it wasn’t the house I grew up in.  I was walking room to room.  Searching for something. When I knew I had to get out. I started to run, I was running towards my sister, she was pregnant and driving a van. She didn’t see me. I jumped into the air and started flying searching for the van. Until my flight turned to falling as I tumbled down through the sky.

Dreams can seem like a movie mash up, different scenes and characters colliding together into a kaleidoscope of images.

Dreams are highly individual.  They are pieces of your soul reaching out to connect to you.

Dreams can be much more than just your personal experiences. Carl Jung proposed,

“…In addition to our immediate consciousness, which is of a thoroughly personal nature and which we believe to be the only empirical psyche (even if we tack on the personal unconscious as an appendix), there exists a second psychic system of a collective, universal, and impersonal nature which is identical in all individuals.”

To Jung there existed a common thread between everyone, the essence that created myths and legends.

Creating more layers to the dreamer’s experiences. Here are a couple of the most common dream themes.

The house: This is you.  The house represents you, your emotions, your past, present, everything you. If you dream of a house, take time to journal about the house.  What did it look like? Smell like? Feel like? Was it familiar? Can you talk to the house? How do you feel in the house? Tapping into the feelings the house invokes helps you to uncover your feelings about yourself and your life.

Running: Running indicates fear.  Take time to look at what in your life you are afraid of? What are you running from? Can you turn around and face what you are running from? If you do, what happens? Does what you are running from talk to you? Say anything? Is there even anyone or anything there?

Pregnancy: Yes, it could mean you are pregnant or someone close to you is. More often pregnancy dreams signifies a new beginning.  Something is being birthed in the world, a new job, career, love interest, idea, project.  What have you been working to cultivate in your life?

Flying: Flying indicates control in life.  You are feeling good about life.  It can also mean you want a better or different perspective on life. Are you feeling in control in life? Do you need to change your perspective on a situation?

Falling: Falling is bringing your attention to where you have no control. Or you are afraid of being out of control. Think of dreams about fear of getting on an airplane.  A common fear for many people.  Think about how it feels to fall? Where do you feel this in life?

Cheating: Ever wake up mad at your partner because they cheated? Or perhaps you wake up feeling guilty because you were the one cheating. Cheating often indicates an insecurity.  If you were cheated on in your dream, are you feeling insecure in your relationship? Is there an area that you feel inadequate in? Do you question your worth?  Really look inward to how you feel about you and your worth to receive love.  Remember, everyone deserves to be loved unconditionally.  If your were the one cheating, are needs being met in the relationship? Is there a an area in your relationship that needs work?  Look at your relationship and your overall satisfaction with it.

As a species we are connected by common themes in our lives.  These common themes can influence our dreams.  Dreams can feel confusing and frustrating because they speak their own language.  However, if you take time this week or this month to start to explore your dreams and themes, you will start to uncover their messages. You might be surprised at what you learn.  Remember, you don’t just have to write, you can speak, collage or draw.  Do what feels the most natural for you.

I request you to write more on this subject. Shall I expect this article to continue every Thursday?

    1. Glad you enjoy the subject. I can’t promise every Thursday because there are so many therapy related issues I want to cover and discuss. I can do once a month. Anything particular you are interested in learning more about when it comes to dreams?

Yes. As if I continue to be in govt service, attend seminars and so on. In the dream, I feel I am allowed to continue as the people have forgotten my date of birth. But I am free from any responsibility for my work.
